About The BS6 Regulation

BS6 or Bharat Stage 6 are Indian emission regulations that help in reducing pollution. They have been applicable from 1st April 2020. Some of the major pollutants from automobile include- NOx (Oxides of Nitrogen), CO (Carbon Monoxide), HC (Hydrocarbons) and PM (Particulate Matter). Lean NOx Trap’s (LNT) primary function is to reduce emission pollutants (CO, HC and NOx) while Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) entraps carbon soot, thereby ensuring cleaner tailpipe emissions.

Carbon soot entrapment and regeneration reset Diesel Particulate Filter for the next cycle of entrapment which occurs periodically based on the drive pattern.

How A Lean NOx Trap (LNT) Functions

Lean NOx Trap (LNT) is a part of after-treatment device responsible for oxidation of Carbon Monoxide (CO), Hydrocarbon (HC) into Carbon Dioxide (CO2) and Water (H2O). It is also responsible for Nitrous Oxides (NOx) entrapment/purging with reduction reaction to Nitrogen (N2) and Oxygen (O2). Sulphur accumulation on LNT is a phenomenon due to available Sulphur in diesel fuel. Excessive Sulphur accumulation leads to drop in efficiency of the LNT to control NOx emissions.
